The first "Three Days of Jazz" in Saalfelden was staged in 1978 at the so-called ‘Ranch’. After a few years the festival in the camp moved to the district of Ramseiden. After the ‘camp’ era, in 2006 the festival ‘moved’ and for more than four years now has been taking place in the centre of Saalfelden. The International Jazzfestival Saalfelden has become one of the most significant festivals of its kind in Europe for musicians, journalists and of course for its audience.
30th birthday of the Saalfelden Jazz festival
After an eventful time for Jazz in Saalfelden and the end of the festival in 2005, we are especially delighted in August 2009 to be able to celebrate the 30th birthday of the Jazz festival in Saalfelden!
We would like to celebrate the occasion with you and have thought up a lot of little highlights. We would like to review the last few decades of the Jazz festival in Saalfelden, with an exhibition of photos & documents. Come with us on a journey through time, covering 29 years of Jazz history and discover the rarities and the finest moments from the past years.
We'll now reveal the one of the highlights at the 30th festival in Saalfelden - one of the real legends of Free Jazz,
Ornette Coleman, will be celebrating with us and this will be a crowning finish to the birthday festival at the final concert on Sunday evening.
Coleman has influenced the history of jazz more than any other. With his album "Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation" - published in 1960 - he not only significantly acted on the atonal avant-garde - rather he established a new style. The last time Ornette Coleman played in Saalfelden was in the year 1988. His concert in Saalfelden will be the first concert in Austria since 14 years.
One formation, which goes in a very special way with our “Birthday Festival” is the
Oliver Lake Trio: exactly 30 years ago the Oliver Lake Trio played the first time in Saalfelden and now they will be our guest again at the 30.Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2009. In the original cast of Oliver Lake (sax), Pheeroan akLaff (drums) and Michael Gregory Jackson (guitar) they will show there virtuosity.
It so happens, another formation, which since ever is well known for there openness and stylistic musical diversity, is celebrating its 30th birthday this year.
"The Ex" from the Netherlands will work together with the ethiopian saxophonist Getatchew Mekurya and present there brand new program at the Jazzfestival Saalfelden. Line up: Getatchew Mekurya (tenor sax) Katherina Ex (drums) Terrie Ex (guitar) Andy Moor (guitar) Arnold de Boer (vocals) Colin McLean (bass) Xavier Charles (clarinet) Brodie West (alto sax) Joost Buis (trombone) Melaku Belay (dance)
The Jazzfestival Saalfelden awards every year the opening project to. This year
Christian Muthspiel is commissioned to compose a piece for the opening concert of the 30th Saalfelden International Jazz Festival
“The invitation to devise an opening project to mark the 30th anniversary of the Saalfelden International Jazz Festival is a great honour as well as being a highlight of my own history at the jazz festival. I have been attending the festival as a guest since 1990 through various projects of my own and when accompanying others. I have accompanied the Octet Ost, Christian Muthspiel & Motley Mothertongue, my brother Wolfgang as a duo and septet and the Vienna Art Orchestra, for example.”, so Christian Muthspiel about the opening project.
About the program he says: “The programme at the Saalfelden International Jazz Festival has always been defined by its stylistic diversity (always striving for the highest quality levels), contemporary and topical slant and clever mix of American, European and Austrian artists with a high proportion of premieres and debut performances – not to mention the fact that Saalfelden has never shied away from large ensembles even though they present more of an economic challenge.” His opening project aims to take account of this tradition.
Muthspiel defines, “It is to be an international composition combining Austrian, European and American musicians. It will not involve a small group but rather an orchestra of sound which will offer me ample scope and possibilities in terms of composition given the large number of instruments. It will be a debut performance both in terms of the group and the work. My jazz projects have always been defined by a strong compositional creative will which only functions under specific basic conditions. This includes the ability of the musicians to move distinctly within the compositional context as improvisers and jazz musicians. This interface between composition and improvisation has always been a focal point of the programme over the last 29 years of the Saalfelden Jazz Festival.”
All about the festival - 4 days 32 concerts!
There will be Jazz again this year – in the Alps – in Congresshaus – in Nexus and on the City Stage right in the centre of Saalfelden.
There has been a little change to the number of the main stage concerts on individual festival days.
New from 2009: Friday: 4 concerts (previously 5), Saturday: 6 concerts (previously 5) , Sunday: 5 concerts
Ticket prices for 2009 are already online at www.jazzsaalfelden.com and you can order your tickets for the festival now and reserve yourself the best seats.
The poster marking of the 30th anniversary of the Saalfelden Jazz Festival, headed by art director Hagen E. Schernthaner from GFB & Partner, you’ll find attached. It makes a powerful statement with a healthy dose of self-mockery through its iconic stylisation and makes it clear that not everything in jazz should be taken so seriously.
“The "30phon", so Hagen E. Schernthaner, “is a self-contained icon which creates a visual link between the 30th anniversary and the saxophone. The optical reflection of popular formalism is intentional since a particular kind of extravagance is related to the topic of jazz, conveyed by a playful sense of effortlessness.”
The best bit of the programme for the Jazz festival in Saalfelden lies in its innovation and its high-risk nature. Absolute topicality will also still be on offer, so we will as usual be releasing our full programme of events at start of June 2009.
